Favicon Generator
Turn any image into a favicon.ico plus the PNG sizes browsers and phones ask for, with the link tags to paste. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use the Favicon Generator
- Drop your image. A square image works best. Anything else is cropped to a square from the centre.
- Check the 16 pixel preview. That is the size that decides whether a favicon works. If it is mush there, simplify the artwork.
- Download and paste. Save the files into your site root and copy the link tags into your head.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I still need a favicon.ico file?
- It is still worth having. Browsers and crawlers request /favicon.ico when no link tag points them elsewhere, and some tools only ever look there. A single ICO holding 16, 32 and 48 pixel images covers that path completely.
- What size should a favicon be?
- All of them, which is why this produces several. 16 and 32 pixels cover browser tabs and bookmarks, 48 is used by some desktop shortcuts, 180 is the Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 are what a web app manifest asks for.
- Why does my logo look like a smudge at 16 pixels?
- Because 16 by 16 is 256 pixels in total, which is not enough for fine strokes, gradients or text. A favicon that works is usually one bold shape with high contrast — often a single letter or symbol taken from the logo rather than the whole thing.
- Does Google show my favicon in search results?
- Yes, beside every result on mobile search. That makes a missing or illegible favicon a click-through cost on traffic you have already earned, not just a cosmetic gap in the browser tab.
