Frequently asked questions
- How is a word counted?
- Anything separated by whitespace counts as one word, which is how word processors and most academic guidelines do it. Hyphenated terms count as a single word.
- Why do social platforms count characters instead of words?
- Because their limits are storage-based rather than editorial. This is why both totals are shown here, with and without spaces, since some platforms exclude whitespace from the limit.
- How is reading time estimated?
- It assumes 200 words per minute, a common average for adults reading on screen. Treat it as a rough guide: dense technical writing is read considerably slower than prose.
- Is my text stored or uploaded?
- No. Counting happens entirely in your browser and nothing is transmitted or saved, which makes it safe to paste unpublished or confidential drafts.
