Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
Going from 10 percent to 12 percent is a rise of two percentage points, but a 20 percent increase. Confusing the two is one of the most common errors in reporting figures.
Why is a 50 percent rise not cancelled by a 50 percent fall?
Because each is applied to a different base. One hundred rises by half to 150, and half of 150 is 75, not 100. Percentage changes compound rather than simply adding up.
How do I calculate a percentage decrease?
Subtract the new value from the old one, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. A negative result from the change calculator here means the value went down.
How do I remove a percentage that was already added?
Divide rather than subtract. To strip 20 percent tax from a gross figure, divide by 1.2. Subtracting 20 percent of the gross gives a different and incorrect answer.
