Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Custom varies, but tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more common convention where tax is added at the till. The difference is small on most bills and either is widely accepted.
How much should I tip?
It depends entirely on the country. Fifteen to twenty percent is normal in the United States, service is often already included in much of Europe, and tipping is uncommon in Japan.
What does rounding up do here?
It raises the per-person amount to the next whole unit of currency, which is the easiest way to split a bill in cash without anyone counting out small change.
Why does each share end in an odd amount?
Because a bill rarely divides evenly. The per-person figure is the exact share, so rounding up is offered separately rather than hidden inside the calculation.
